Luke 2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Luke 2:22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses [1] were accomplished [2], they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord [3];) 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord [4], A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
[1]Moses is probably the most famous of the Hebrew prophet/leaders. The Biblical books of Deuteronomy, Exodus, and Numbers are significantly about him. He is also referred to in Mark 1:44, 7:10, 9:4-5, 10:3-4, 12:19, 12:26, Matthew 8:4, 17:3-4, 19:7-8, 22:24, 23:2, Luke 5:14, 9:30, 9:33, 16:29, 16:31, 20:28, 20:37, 24:27, 24:44, and John 1:17, 1:45, 3:14, 5:45-46, 6:32, 7:19, 7:22-23, 8:5, 9:28-29. Because Moses was supposed to have written the Pentateuch, many of these references are to stories or Jewish behavior codes from those books.
[2]Leviticus 12:1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. 3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.
[3]Exodus 13:2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine... 12 That thou shalt set apart unto the Lord all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the Lord's. 13 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.
[4]Leviticus 12:6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest.
